Gerhard Ornig Quartet - Face Time

The trumpet quartet is considered to be the most traditional and successful formation of Jazz.

The young European trumpet player and composer, Gerhard Ornig’s style roots back in Jazz, but in his music pieces he is looking for elements from other genres as well. The band, Gerhard Ornig Quartet, has enough freedom for colourful improvisations, giving the key to his high standard living Jazz. Enchanting melodies, smooth jazz are giving the heart of their swinging music.

Gerhard Ornig is an award-winning Austrian trumpet player, composer and arranger, currently living and working in Amsterdam, member of various musical projects on the European scale, for instance the Zagreb Jazz Orkestar (formerly HGM Jazz Orkestar Zagreb), BvR Flamenco Big Band, New European Jazz Collective or the Neutral Ground Brass Band. Ornig started to study trumpet at the age of 15 at the “Johann-Josef-Fux Conservatory” in Graz. Ornig continued his professional musical studies at the Jazz Faculty of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz, Austria as a student of Prof. Eduard Holnthaner and Prof. Jim Rotondi.

The trumpet player graduated with special honor receiving his Bachelor of Arts Diploma. Ornig continued his studies in Jazz Performance at The Conservatorium van Amsterdam. 2015 Gerhard was awarded as the “Best Trumpet Player” as well as the “Best Improvised Jazz Soloist” at the Riga Jazz Stage an international jazz trumpet Competition.

Based on his continuous success Gerhard Ornig was nominated for Scholarship at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music, where the biggest names in jazz has studied, such as Herbie Hancock or Ron Carter. After picking up the influence in New York the young trumpet player returned to Europe to establish his own quartet.

Apart from performing Gerhard is also writing, composing and arranging for his own groups as well as for Big Bands and other Ensembles. Gerhard is leading his own Trio and his own Quintet participates in numerous ensembles and bands. Over the years he had the chance to work with many artists and bands from all over the world: European Jazz Orchester, Mereneu Project, Urban Voyage, JM Jazz World Orchestra, Graz Composers Orchestra, Miguel Zenon, Mike Holober, Gerald Preinfalk, Dick Oatts, Terell Stafford, Erik Truffaz, Matthias Rüegg, Peter Suave, Fay Claasen, Avishai Darash Quartet and Quintet.
