Matyas Gayer is one of a handful of young pianists who is successfully forging his own distinctive style and musical voice out of the greatness of a modern piano tradition. Matyas' influences extend from Bud Powell, Wynton Kelly, Mulgrew Miller to such great living masters as Keith Jarrett or Brad Mehldau.

Matyas Gayer, the twenty three years old Hungarian pianist, first fell in love with piano at the age of four. When Gayer turned fourteen, founded his first band and won Hungary’s young talent competition, the Golden Ten Award. Gayer has been showing passion to straight ahead, mainstream jazz, since. In his teenage years, Gayer started his professional musical studies at Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. In 2009 Gayer performed at Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia. Matyas won first prize and was awarded a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, Boston Afterwards, Gayer continued his musical studies in Austria, at the University of Performing Arts Graz, under the direction of Olaf Polziehn. In Graz, Gayer founded the Matyas Gayer Trio alongside drummer, Oleg Markov and bassist, Matyas Hofecker. In 2012 the Generations International Jazz Festival selected Gayer for piano and was awarded the opportunity to record a CD in the famous Winterthur Studio in Switzerland and play with some of the jazz world’s elites, including Louis Hayes and Peter Washington. Building on his success, Gayer was invited to the illustrious Luzern Piano Festival, where he performed as the youngest participant. Later in 2014, Gayer moved to New York and was able to share the stage with some of the greatest musicians in jazz. Gayer played at well-known establishments in New York including Something Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club and performed with outstanding musicians like David Wong and Jay Leonhart. In both year of 2014 and 2015, Matyas Gayer was finalist at the Montreux Jazz Competition.

Matyas Hofecker and Oleg Markov’s passion shown to straight ahead, mainstream jazz led to the formation of Matyas Gayer Trio. The band was established at Graz Art University in 2011, and has been continuously successful since. Matyas Gayer Trio featuring the saxist, Sandor Molnar won first prize at Internetional Zilina Jazz Contest, 2015. The young Trio has toured many times around Europe in countries such as England, Spain, France, Scotland, Ireland, Austria and Italy and played at top music venues like Jamboree Barcelona, Porgy and Bess Vienna, Birds Eye Basel, Glasgow Art Club, Palace of Arts Budapest, and 606 Club Vortex London

„Matyas Gayer is member of the leaders of jazz’s future generation”

David Hazeltine, New York, 2014

„Audiences and fellow musicians alike cannot help but come under the spell of his playing – not so much because of his sheer technique, which is incidentally amazing to be sure, as on account of the superb originality and resourcefulness with which he approaches even the best-known standards and makes them his own.”

Budapest Jazz Club, 2014
